Reflections on a year of community service

As the year comes to an end many Rostrum clubs look back over the year to review their member's progress.

One such review was Rostrum Club 27 in Morwell Victoria who celebrated 60 years of service to their community this year. A great milestone which has seen many changes in the club.

Can you match the goals achieved by the club members?

Public speaking courses and practice

I have watched many people improve in their confidence and ability to hold audience attention over the years through involvement with Rostrum. Some people come for a quick fix and helping hand with a special occasion speech, some come with a longer term career goal in mind and some sneak in the door to find their confidence and flair.

Great ideas on speech design from Craig Harrison

What a great article on speech craft from Craig Harrison.  Follow Craig's lead and fight your tendency to start a presentation without the proper introduction and speech title.  Set the scene correctly so that you don't waste time building credibility.

Learning public speaking from others

I was surprised to hear a member of our Rostrum public speaking club say that she had learned so much in her first few months at the club.  She was very shy and did not volunteer to speak on many occasions at all.

Connecting with People When You Speak Part 2

Breathing is the Secret for Variation in a Speech

Changing your breathing will change your Tone, Tempo, Volume and Intensity and at the same time be in sync with your gestures and changes in your facial expressions and body language.

You can train for variation in your speech much like you train in a gym.

Impromptu Speeches or speaking at short notice

Peter Martindale
How often are you required to speak without notice, and without being given any time to prepare your thoughts. This might be at a party in front of friends and family or at a work meeting in front of colleagues.
