Public speaking courses and practice

I have watched many people improve in their confidence and ability to hold audience attention over the years through involvement with Rostrum. Some people come for a quick fix and helping hand with a special occasion speech, some come with a longer term career goal in mind and some sneak in the door to find their confidence and flair.

Each of us follows an interesting journey but the thing that strikes me as most important is that each person has the ability to practise presenting to a friendly audience and to gradually incorporate the coach's feedback into each speech.

A friend of mine told me that his fear of public speaking was overcome when he realised that the audience were there to hear what he had to say.  He knew his material and practised his delivery.  Unless the audience walked out they were in the presentation together with him. Everyone wanted to enjoy the talk so his focus was to make the presentation interesting.

It's also true that with each practice you develop strategies for building your confidence.  Each time you deliver a speech you can make the little modifications that connect you closer to your audience and make your story better.  I used to think that spontaneity was king but now I know how much effort that apparent spontaneity takes!

Good luck with your goals this year. Check out the Rostrum way and find your voice.
