4 ESSENTIAL MOTIVATING ELEMENTS WHEN A ROSTRUM COACH/ CRITIC/ MENTOR GIVES FEEDBACK.

Rostrum coaches are trained to work with club members to help them to better say what they want to say.  Coaches know that their role is very important for the success of their clubs.

Trained coaches have a toolkit of tips and hints to help Rostrum members improve their skills and move towards success in their speaking goals. Coaching is a special skill and coaches work to expand their personal knowledge so that they can assist others.

Some of the important things for a coach to remember are that to:
  1. AFFIRM the speaker immediately in a sincere and honest manner.
  2. BE SPECIFIC and describe what they did right or almost right.
  3. SHARE your personal positive feelings about what the speaker did.
  4. ENCOURAGE them to keep up the good work.
POSITIVE FEEDBACK
Always use an enthusiastic uptime tone, fast pace, loud volume with big gestures.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT
The coach, critic, mentor immediately changes their Tone, Tempo, Volume and Intensity. When describing areas of improvement use a quiet, neutral, mid Tone, with Mid Tempo, Mid Volume.

BE SPECIFIC
Describe the speaker's actual behaviours so that the speaker can see/ hear and experience what they actually did, and if they want to can choose to change their behaviours.

BE REAL AND AUTHENTIC
Mean what you say and say what you mean gently.

FINAL THOUGHTS

  1. There is no revealed doctrine about Public Speaking. A coach is always sharing her/his own thoughts, ideas, beliefs, experiences. It is essential it be done warmly, gently, respectfully and caringly.
  2. Remember that the Rostrum member’s speaking is more important than the Rostrum speaker’s problem(s) And the Fellowship and Relationship is more important than any solution(s) you as coach propose.
  3. There are three kinds of Relationship:- To, For, With. The coach/critic/mentor relationship is always a ‘with relationship.’
