Speaking at a Special Occasion

Special occasion speakingIf you have been asked to speak at a special occasion you need to do a bit of thinking.
  • Will there be other speakers?  Can you get in contact to minimize overlap?
  • Who are you going to be speaking to?  What does each of these people expect to hear from you? Are there special thanks or special mentions required?
  • Can you make your presentation entertaining? What do you want people to remember? Do you have any interesting stories that are appropriate to share?
  • Do you have to use a microphone?  Do you know how to stop the "popping" noises?
  • Where will you be standing?  Can people see you clearly?
The most important part of your preparation after you have prepared your story is to practice, practice, practice.  Our Rostrum club has heard many wedding speeches, conference presentations, project reports, university assignments.  A friendly group can give you great feedback before you "go live".
Check out the speaking tips on the Rostrum website.
